Come for the education – Fort Ward Park is a former Union Civil War defense stronghold to protect DC from Confederate soldiers. The onsite museum has lots of interesting artifacts and little-known details about the area and nearby battles. But Fort Ward Park’s historical significance isn’t the only reason to visit. The surrounding landscape has picnic areas, an amphitheater, tennis courts, and a playground, plus plenty of well-worn trails for a leisurely walk or trail run. <\/p>\n

For summer picnic plans, utilize the park’s reserved shelters for grills, tables, and all the space you need for a socially distanced party. Fort Ward Park is easy to access via I395, and has free parking throughout the park.
